Happy New Year!!! This is that time of year where we all reset, regroup, rebrand, recharge, relax (a little), and plan how we will tackle this new year with a refreshed mindset. I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting over the last few weeks as I have had more time off than ever from work. In approaching a new year, I love to come up with a word to set as my intention and focus for the entire year and aim to apply it to every aspect of my life. I will get to my word for 2022 but first let me digress for a second.

I had a thought during my meditation that I never really contemplated prior to this new year. I believe the phrase “new year, new me” is catchy, yes but a tad problematic. Sometimes, we are always so eager to get to the new year that we do not really take the time to appreciate and ruminate on the year we are leaving behind. We are so quick to forget the past and move toward the future that we don’t realize the mistakes made, the lessons learned, the blessings that come to fruition, and the gratitude in the little things from 2021. So, I want to share with you a message my sister-in-law sent to me, and I hope this resonates with you if you have decided that a new you is stepping into 2022.

Build on the old you of 2021, to establish the new you in 2022. That philosophy is part of my mantra for 2022. I am taking the good, the bad, and the ugly and investing those lessons and blessings into myself for 2022. Oh, by the way, that is my resolution/word for 2022…INVEST. When you think of the word invest, you automatically think about money. A further deep dive into the word reveals an additional definition: “devote (one’s time, effort, or energy) to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result.”

And that is exactly what I am doing in every aspect of my life but starting with myself. To know me is to know that New Year’s Eve is my favorite holiday. I am very particular about how and with whom I ring in the New Year. This year, knowing my intention, I travelled a few hours away from Los Angeles to a wellness resort. The purpose of this resort is to provide a life-changing wellness retreat and experience that will reinforce a commitment to a healthy lifestyle. I wish I could capture in words what these last few days have meant to me. I went in with no expectations and came out so fulfilled. Each day was centered on a routine cemented in healing your mind, body, and spirit. More importantly, you are surrounded by a community with like-minded individuals on the same journey. We danced, worked out, meditated, laughed, walked, prayed, and wrote love letters to ourselves. We were taking the time to step away from everyday life to solely INVEST in ourselves. Riding back from this resort was a little emotional for me because I wanted to stay in that place…free of responsibility, worries, cares, and stress. I longed for the community I built over the last five days. But as I drove away and re-entered the world, I realized the blessing of this moment. I was so grateful to have this opportunity to do exactly what I wanted and accomplish my goal for the new year. My goal is to INVEST in myself, and I was fortunate enough to do just that. As flashbacks of my time come back to me, I will capitalize on those moments, those lessons, that lifestyle, and that community. I felt free, light, happy, inspired, creative, loved, and grateful. I will INVEST those feelings into my life. I will build and stand on them as I move into 2022. I will continue to INVEST in myself but also in my relationship, my career, my family, my friendships, my fitness, my finances, my mentality, my diet, my creativity, and my dreams.

I encourage you all to do the same for this new year. Set your intentions and your goals! Write them down. Post them in a visible spot or return to them weekly. Create a vision board. Write in a journal. Meditate and pray. Do what you need to do to institute your joyous, successful, and beautiful new year. Wishing you all the best! Here’s to 2022 and beyond!!!

Happy New Year Rachel! This is so beautiful, inspiring, and motivating. Personally, I've struggled with my word for the year. Ultimately, I settled on two - creativity and organization. But in order to create, I need order with my time, work, mindset, etc. So, I'm currently reading two books by Jordan Raynor: Redeeming Your Time and Called to Create. Even though things feel a little crazy in the world right now, I'm still kind of excited about the potential of 2022.

We can manifest both in 2022! Love the book suggestions! I need to redeem my time too! It's hard to balance typical life duties with being creative and taking time to invest in ourselves but it is possible!

"The old you is a fighter. And that’s worth celebrating." Oooh this hit for me. Thank you for sharing and framing it this way. I'd never thought of it like this.

Hi Hillary, it really gives us something to think about! We want to change and grow, adapt and overcome but we can't forget about the person we were before we worked to make changes. The old "you" is always worth celebrating!

Thanks for sharing! What an inspiration! I loved the word “invest.” Found the quote from your sister-in-law “spot on.” It provided food for though!

Hi Alma! It definitely is food for thought! I've replayed it everyday in my head. I am a new version of myself each year but that doesn't mean we can celebrate the old too!
